Reporting from the World Health Organization (WHO) palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of life of patients and their families against life-threatening diseases. Meanwhile, the way to prevent and handle pain is physically, psychosocial, and spiritual. So, this palliative care is no longer treating illness, but caring for someone who has chronic disease to live the rest of his life better.

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) works with three organizations, namely: the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI), YKI West Java, and the Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung General Hospital (RSHS) to carry out palliative care training in the Enabling Palliative Care Trainers (EnPaCT) project or Empowerment of Palliative Care Trainers.

"It is important to continue to provide training in Palliative Care for Cancer Patients to health workers and nurses, as well as to the wider community. Palliative care can improve the quality of life of patients, as well as families who have direct contact with sick family members, both physically, psychosocial, or spiritually, "said Prof. Dr. dr. Aru Sudoyo , Chair of YKI at the EnPaCT program , January 28, 2019.


3. EnPaCT will be held in West Java with a duration of three years with a target of 80,000 residents of West Java

"I am truly heartened by the friendship between our community and also the ongoing collaboration between our health professionals in improving the standards of palliative care in Indonesia. For the past 10 years, and with today's launch, this program will benefit at least 100,000 people in West Java, "said Associate Professor Peter Pang , SIF Governor .

The aim of EnPaCT is to improve the quality of life of patients facing life-threatening diseases in the West Java region. The EnPaCT project is the first project in West Java. Meanwhile, it becomes the third in Indonesia.

Previously, namely the Palliative Care project for Children (2009-2012) and Improvement of Palliative Care Practices (2015-2018). Each is three years long and is located in Jakarta.

The main trainer in the field of palliative care will teach caregivers and volunteers. Then, caregivers and volunteers will share palliative knowledge with patients and families. For example, projects in Jakarta succeeded in presenting 62 main trainers who taught carers and volunteers, then educated at least 20 thousand patients and their families.

The homecare model was successfully introduced to the "Palliative Care for Children" project after obtaining approval and support from the Indonesian National Nurses Association in 2012.

6. EnPaCT has a target to be able to educate 350 health workers until March 2022

Over the next three years, the project will assign a number of Singapore International Volunteers (SIV) in collaboration with YKI, RSHS, and other health institutions participating in West Java. The approach taken is to share knowledge and skills. The SIV will train local health workers with a comprehensive module and practice of palliative care.

7. The launch of the EnPaCT project was inaugurated by the Government of West Java Province, represented by Ms. Atalia Praratya Ridwan Kamil

On January 28, 2018, Atalia Praratya Ridwan Kamil representing the West Java Provincial Government inaugurated the launch of the EnPaCT project in RSHS Bandung.

"Related to palliative itself, this is a new thing, of course, it is still not widely disseminated to the public. Apparently, this is how we do care for patients who have specialties, "said Atalia Praratya Ridwan Kamil .

The hope is that the EnPaCT project in West Java can increase understanding of the importance of palliative care for the community. That's because the role of all people, both medical, family and community workers is important for the success of palliative care for patients with life-threatening diseases.
